Landscape Archaeology

Description

The aims of the course are to teach you how to:

  • Critically assess the ways in which people have investigated and interpreted archaeological landscapes
  • Examine the application of GIS and related technologies by archaeologists
  • Become proficient in the use of GIS software

The course includes a combination of seminar discussions and use of computer software. The ESRI GIS program ArcGIS will be learnt through a series of lectures, lab practicum and hours spent in front of a computer. There will be readings that will give you a basic understanding of GIS in general and the ArcGIS program in specific, and you will work through a series of exercises.

Course objectives/ Learning Outcomes

The course provides:

  • An in-depth understanding of theoretical paradigms and methodological practices of landscape archaeology
  • An overview of current substantive landscape archaeology case studies
  • A working knowledge of ESRI ArcGIS software
  • The ability to read and critical assess the literature on landscape archaeology
  • The ability to conduct original GIS analysis and research
  • The ability to present seminars and lead class discussions

To complete this course students must enrol in ANTHRO 703 A and B, or ANTHRO 703.
