Description

A course developing university-wide skills and strategies for close reading, writing and analysis. The idea of "text" links analytical with writing competence; we consider what a text is in various formats, explore different kinds of texts and media and engage in different modes of writing. Lecturers discuss a range of academic and public texts in context as well as how rhetoric and the role of the audience shape meaning. The course emphasises how to do things with texts and cultivates an awareness of text types and effective reading and writing strategies. Students hone those skills and strategies in workshops.

The course reader includes essays on language, politics, culture and history, ranging from narrative and journalism writing to public and academic essays. The reader provides the basis for lectures, coursework, assignments and workshop writing activities. While not a basic writing or skills-based course, the course does cover sentence, paragraph and essay structure along with strategies for reading and writing and making arguments in academic, public and professional writing. Not appropriate as an ESOL writing course.

ENGLISH 121 Summer School enrolment is limited to 45 students, with admission on a first come, first enrolled basis. ENGLISH 121 Semester One and Semester Two enrolment is limited to 200 students per semester including all TAS students, with admission on a first come, first enrolled basis.

ENGLISH 121G Summer School enrolment is limited to 55 students, with admission on a first come, first enrolled basis. ENGLISH 121G Semester One and Semester Two enrolment is limited to 100 students per semester including all TAS students, with admission on a first come, first enrolled basis.
