ENGLISH 701

Milton and Poetic Authority

Please note: this is archived course information from 2018 for ENGLISH 701.

Description

Milton is the poet who has been most significant in the establishment of the familiar canon of English poetry, so his achievement raises questions about the greatness of poetry written in one set of historical circumstances for an audience that the poem itself participates in constructing. In this context the course covers political as well as poetic works.
