Description
Theory and Text
Survey of the most important twentieth-century French literary critics and critical movements.
Course description
"French theory", a corpus of literary, cultural and social philosophies developed by scholars in French universities, has had a major impact on the development of cultural studies, gender studies and postcolonial studies. The course provides an introduction to French theory, focusing particularly on the questions of identity and language. Theorists may include Jean Baudrillard, Michel Foucault, Luce Irigaray, Pierre Bourdieu, Jacques Derrida and Gilles Deleuze. Literary texts and other forms of cultural production will be used for illustration and "application" of concepts, with the objective of evaluating the usefulness of these concepts in our reading of complex cultural texts.
