FTVMS 203

Techno-culture and New Media

Please note: this is archived course information from 2017 for FTVMS 203.

Description

What does it mean to live in a "digital age"? Popular culture, human relationships and other aspects of everyday life are now thoroughly infused with digital platforms and devices that develop continually and rapidly. Are we being transformed as a result and, if so, how? This course examines the technological mediation of our everyday experiences in the context of theories and debates about the digital age. It explores the opportunities and constraints as well as the pleasures and frustrations of new media environments. It considers recent technologies, devices and platforms within the broad context of an emerging "technoculture". The course is designed not only for new media enthusiasts but equally for those who may find themselves sceptical, bewildered or ambivalent in the face of new media developments.
