Description

In 2017 this course will focus on the history of the First World War as a global phenomenon, acknowledging that the war was of Europe’s making but soon enveloped the planet. The course asks questions of the origins of the conflict and the nature and impact of industrial total war at a local, national and global level.

Key focal points of the course include: the military conduct of the war in a global setting, economic warfare, the diplomacy of warfare, belligerency, neutrality, the militarisation of societies, war violence and its regulation, humanitarianism, internationalism, human displacement and post-war reconstruction.

Students will have the opportunity to undertake research on an aspect of the history of the First World War that interests them.
