PHIL 743

Philosophy of Religion 2

Please note: this is archived course information from 2014 for PHIL 743.

Description

An inquiry into the concept of God, paying special attention to God as understood by "classical theism". Contemporary philosophers hold strikingly different conceptions of the God of classical theism, as will be illustrated at the outset by contrasting the views of Marilyn McCord Adams and Brian Davies. We will consider how to interpret the classical divine properties – such as, atemporality, immutability, impassibility, necessity and simplicity – and the omni-attributes (omnipotence, omniscience, omnibenevolence, omnipresence). We will pay special attention to the question whether God is to be understood as a supreme person.
