China and the World

Please note: this is archived course information from 2017 for POLITICS 254.

Description

This course provides a comprehensive overview of China’s engagement with the world since 1978. Its purpose is to develop students’ understanding of the factors shaping China’s foreign policy choices and the implications of China’s global rise, as well as to develop their writing and analytical skills.

The course consists of four parts: Part 1 places the Chinese world-view in historical context. Part 2 explores China’s relationships with a variety of countries and regions, notably its East Asian neighbours, as well as the United States and Africa. Part 3 examines the role of China in international institutions such as UN and WTO. Part 4 considers the implications of the global presence in China, particularly international NGOs in the global human rights and climate change regimes.
