Description
This course covers the formation and transformation of Iberian literatures in their cultural contexts from medieval to modern eras. It examines evolutions of literary genres and movements in the contexts of social, political, religious and/or artistic developments and in relation to major cultural groups across Iberian homelands and diasporas: Christians, Muslims, Jews; Castilians, Catalans, Galicians/Portuguese, Basques; indigenous, mestizos; colonists, immigrants, exiles. Key issues include: literary/artistic traditions vs innovations; multicultural values vs cross-cultural critiques; ethnic centres vs peripheries.
Electronic reading packets and/or books in the short loan library include Spanish texts and English translations (Spanish majors refer to or quote from originals in essays). Multimedia lectures (mixing English and Spanish) cover cultural and critical issues in relation to Iberian history, literature and arts. Class discussions apply critical terms and references to close readings/viewings of assigned texts and related videos. Students are guided in writing critical reviews, research essays and analytical commentaries.
