Beginners' Spanish 1
Course aims
To give a solid grounding in the basic vocabulary and grammar of Spanish, enabling the student to hold a conversation on contemporary topics and provide for the necessities of daily life.
Emphasis is on communicative competence: speaking, listening and reading comprehension, vocabulary acquisition, and writing in Spanish, focussing on the present tense.
The rich cultures of the Hispanic world are studied in the context of language acquisition.
NB: Students who have prior knowledge of Spanish MUST take a placement test and declare previous Spanish study on their Language Competency form when enrolling.
General Education
Students wishing to take Beginners' Spanish 1 as a General Education paper must be enrolled in SPANISH 104G. Places are limited in both 104 and 104G. You cannot enrol in 104 and then change your enrolment at a later date to have it count as a General Education paper unless you do so within the first two weeks of classes AND there is a free place in a 104G stream. 104 and 104G students have classes together.
