Assessment

The assessment in this course will consist of two research essays and a review essay.

Essay 1 (2,500 words) 35%
Essay 2 (2,500 words) 35%
Review Essay (2,000 words)     30%

Essay 1

This essay will answer one of the tutorial focus questions listed for weeks 3-11. It is due one week after the tutorial at which the question is discussed. Students will be required to give a short presentation on their topic at the relevant tutorial. Though the presentation itself will not be graded, it is necessary in order for the essay to be marked.

Essay 2

This essay should be chosen from one of the list of questions below. It is due by 4pm on Monday 26 April. Note: Your essay must be on a different topic to your seminar-based essay.

  1. You may answer another of the tutorial focus questions, or:

  2. Was the Union advantageous for Ireland?

  3. Why did Daniel O'Connell's support for the abolition of slavery pose dilemmas for the Irish in America?

  4. 'Everywhere in the nineteenth century the Irish immigrant experienced acute disadvantage and discrimination'. Discuss.

  5. Why have writings on Home Rule figured so minimally in the revisionist controversy?

  6. 'John Redmond's support for the British war effort was wholly consistent with the nationalist party's goal of securing Irish nationhood'. Discuss.

  7. Did World War One and its aftermath significantly alter the British Government's approach to Ireland and its future?

  8. Discuss the role of the state in creating ideological prescriptions affecting Irish women in the period 1930-1960.

  9. 'There would be a Paisleyism without Paisley, though hardly so profiled. But there could not be a Paisley without Paisleyism'. (J. J. Lee, Ireland 1912-1985, Politics and Society, p. 427). Discuss.

Review Essay

This essay is designed to encourage students to think about broad themes and issues addressed in the course. The questions will be distributed in class in week 9.

Policy on extensions and late work:
An extension for work beyond the due date may be given on medical grounds or in exceptional personal circumstances at the discretion of the course coordinator but should be made in advance of the submission date.

Late work will be penalised by having a percentage of marks deducted.

A detailed guide to essay writing is located at the end of your courseguide. You should consult it if you are uncertain about the Department's expectations and requirements. You should also feel free to meet with the lecturer if you are having difficulties.

Note: Plagiarism means presenting somebody else's words as your own without due acknowledgement. Plagiarism will be severely penalised in this course, and may result in failure and disciplinary action. If you are unsure about what constitutes plagiarism you should consult the course coordinator.
