Final Examination:  Thursday June 24th at 9.15 am

Please note that plussage does not apply in CHINESE 200. In other words, your final overall grade will in all cases be comprised of your combined coursework mark and your final examination mark.

All tests and assessment are held during scheduled lecture hours unless otherwise stated. No make-ups will be available. In genuinely exceptional circumstances well supported with documentation, students may apply for an aegrotat or compassionate pass by following the procedures set out in the University's examination regulations.

Assignments
You will complete three written assignments during the semester. These must be handed into the General Office of the School of Asian Studies or placed them into the box marked CHINESE 200 IN in the lobby of Level 3, 58 Symonds St. by the time specified.
Assignments handed in late without prior consultation with the lecturer concerned will not be marked.
All assignments should be written on A4 sized paper with the following details at the top of each page.

Essay Marking Schedule
(Marks out of 40)
37-40 Well-structured; good grammatical command; able to construct complex sentences and express complex ideas; wide range of vocabulary used
30-36 Coherent structure; uses grammar structures appropriately but with occasional minor errors; sentence patterns and ideas tend to be somewhat restricted in range; some limitation in vocabulary used
22-29 Structure lacks coherence in places; some inaccuracy in use of grammar structures; able to convey simplified concepts with a limited range of sentence patterns; some inappropriate use of vocabulary
14-21 Inadequately structured; narrow range of grammatical structures used; shows some ability to express ideas at a reduced level of language tenor
7-13 Inadequate response to the essay topic; shows weak command of grammar structure but portions of the work show some coherence at a reduced level
0-6 Fails to respond to the essay topic; shows little command of grammar structure; credit only given for isolated sentences or phrases

Marking Criteria for Translation into Chinese
For passages marked out of a total of 30 marks.
27-30 Accurate and economic rendering of the English text without omission using appropriate grammar structures and vocabulary.
20-26 Good general rendering of the English text but with some looseness of phrasing vis à vis the original. Some minor omission. Occasional minor errors in the use of grammar structures and vocabulary.
15-19 Often misses or disregards details of the original text. Lacks economy of phrasing but is able to render the general sense of the passage. Persistent minor errors in the use of grammar structures and vocabulary.
10-14 Numerous major errors and omissions. The overall sense of the original passage is distorted at many points but is still roughly recognisable. Weak command of the appropriate grammar structures and vocabulary.
5-9 A few correct sentences and phrses fail to compensate for serious omissions and weaknesses in the use of grammar and vocabulary.
0-4 Unable to render the text. Shows little command of grammar structure. Credit can only be given for isolated sentences or phrases.

Presentation according to instructions
Punctuation
