LANGTCHG 719 Computer Assisted Language Learning - Assignments

Provisional Info

Assignment 1. Courseware creation

For the first assignment you will create a sample language learning exercise using a web authoring tool Hot Potatoes.

In addition to creating the exercise(s), you will describe the setting and learning objectives, give your reflections on the process of producing the courseware, and evaluate its operation. (We will discuss what this means exactly in class.)

Exercises such as these typically do not stand alone, but are tied to teaching in the classroom or to assignments. You should briefly indicate how the web exercises fit in with other aspects of teaching. What is the setting for the exercise. For the evaluation of the operation of your courseware, you should simply give your assessment of how well it achieves your own objectives. Is it sufficient for the set objectives? It may do the job or there may be something that you would like to be able to do, but can't.

Due: April 10th. See the Yellow Sheet handed out in class for the Departmental Policy on Late Assignments.

Assignment 2.  Write a paper on CALL.

Due June 14th   2000 words

Check yellow sheet for departmental policy on late assignments.

For this paper, you will address the main issues covered in this course:

• How can technology be used to enhance language learning?
• Where does technology fit best in the complex process of learning a  language?
• Does technology offer benefits beyond those available in a traditional classroom?

In order to approach the place of CALL in language learning, you will choose ONE specific area – reading/writing/speaking/listening/testing/vocab/culture/… – and critically assess the contribution that technology makes or can make.

In your paper, you will survey the current state of the art for the area you choose and use the questions above to critically assess the role of technology.

Please produce the paper in the form of a html file or Word document with links (along the lines of Horst et al.) The format is similar to the online Language Learning and Technology journal. Horst et al is one article from the journal that we have looked at.
