Contemporary Issues in Gender and Development

The purpose of this course is to critically interrogate selected contemporary themes, issues and practices in gender and development. It builds on work in DEVELOP 702 that introduced key analytical concepts in the study of gender and development. This course takes this work further by focusing on the dynamics of contemporary themes, issues and practices in gender and development and finding appropriate ways of addressing various problematics. Themes are selected by the students as a way to strengthen their own critical tools of analysis which are necessary to address gender issues on the ground.
By the end of this semester, you should know:
- The gender and development parameters of major contemporary issues such as representation, poverty, human rights, sexuality, security, governance, environment, fundamentalism, civil society
- Some theoretical and practical strategies for integrating key analytical concepts into critical development debates
- Several ways of approaching the problematic of gender and development on the ground
By the end of the semester, you should be able to:
- Think critically and theoretically about specific gender and development issues
- Access academic debates in gender and development
- Critically analyse and verbally discuss academic articles
- Write and verbally present a concise and persuasive argument suitable for a graduate audience
- Understand how to translate theory into practice
