Description

Course Overview and Objectives:

This theory-intensive, postgraduate seminar examines trends, causes and problems in the global rise and spread of democracy. It is designed to introduce students to key questions and approaches in the study of regime change by engaging canonical works in the field. By its end, students should have developed an understanding of the factors underpinning democratic transition and consolidation (or a lack of them) and an appreciation for the breadth of institutional types at play in world politics. More broadly, the goal of the course is to encourage students to think in theoretical terms, and to develop analytical, synthetic and communication skills through a combination of oral and written assignments.
