Please note: this is archived course information from 2017 for ARTHIST 718.

Description

"Museums: Past and Present" is a course which examines the history of museums from Renaissance private collections up to recent “new generation” museums such as the Getty Museum, Los Angeles. Topics covered include the origins of museums in Renaissance art collecting, the beginnings of public museums, private artists’ museums, natural history museums and museums of modern art, as well as the involvement of contemporary artists with the museum. Changing concepts of the museum will be addressed, as well as the notions of collections and how they were formed. Students will present seminars and write a longer research essay on individual museums or issues connected to the museum concept.
