COMMS 304

Gender, Politics and the Media

Please note: this is archived course information from 2017 for COMMS 304.

Description

This course critically examines the relationships between gender, politics and the media. In particular, it employs a gender perspective to ask questions about how media representations become political when they reinforce or subvert social roles and ideologies; what the role of the media in gendering political and social processes is; how gender is mediated and becomes a political issue. We will reflect upon the theories, debates and controversies that reveal the interplay between gender, politics and the media and will apply a variety of theoretical and methodological approaches to the gendered analysis of contemporary media, politics, culture and society.
