COMMS 701

Communication and Data

Please note: this is archived course information from 2020 for COMMS 701.

Description

Data – how it is collected, manipulated, stored and analysed in relation to media users – has become a crucial aspect of the study of communication technologies. At the same time, neither data nor the algorithms that shape media users’ experiences are neutral in their impacts.

Alongside issues of material and immaterial storage such as archives and clouds, the course addresses concerns to do with privacy, identity, algorithmic bias and discrimination, as well as complexity, informational capitalism, and affective labour.

While focusing on present data formations and implications, the course will also explore possibilities for rethinking the past and predicting the future through the analysis and visualisation of data.
