Creative Writing

Please note: this is archived course information from 2018 for CREWRIT 797.

The MCW is designed to support, inform and develop your creative practice within a lively and diverse community of other writers.

During this one-year programme, convened by Paula Morris, you will write a novel, short story collection, poetry collection or creative non-fiction, supplemented by an ongoing reading journal.

Classes meet twice a week and are two hours long. In the workshop class, you’ll submit drafts of stories, poems or novel sections for discussion and feedback, and take part in writing exercises.

All students also attend a weekly seminar, a forum for thinking and talking about writing. We discuss published work and explore the key issues of technique you need to consider in your work – including point of view, form, narrative structure, characterisation, setting, use of language, dialogue and detail – in focused craft discussions. The seminar class also includes discussions of editing, publishing, international submissions and adaptation.

The seminar class hosts a range of visitors, including local and international writers; practitioners from the world of film, radio and theatre; and speakers from the publishing and literary arts world. All students are encouraged to become involved in university-wide events and performances. MCW students regularly give readings at a monthly series organised by English, Drama and Writing Studies.

We have close connections with the Auckland Writers Festival, the New Zealand Book Awards Trust, the Māori Literature Trust, the New Zealand Book Council, the New Zealand Society of Authors and the Michael King Writers’ Centre, and offer numerous opportunities for students to be involved with the vibrant Auckland literary scene.

To complete this course students must enrol in both CREWRIT 797 A and B. Note: the MCW has a specific application process and entry to the programme is highly competitive.
