FTVMS 230

Online Media and Democracy

Please note: this is archived course information from 2017 for FTVMS 230.

Description

This course examines the relationships between communication technologies and democracy. It reflects upon the ways in which technology can enhance, inhibit or reshape democracy. We will focus on the relationship between old and new technologies, the public, the government and activism. In a viable democracy citizens must not only be informed, but also able to freely and safely engage in democratic debate and political activity. As such, democratic societies face the challenge of balancing needs for information, communication and surveillance. The advent of digital technology has made this challenge more complex. This course explores the role that digital technologies play in political and democratic processes.
