Description

Investigates colonised space through its mapping by media. Colonialism is inscribed in ‘new’ countries though a range of media forms, including cartography, photography, film, television, satellites and sensing technology, producing a specific media ecology. Regarding such technologies as both a taking over and a make-over of place, the course examines the media infrastructure of colonial environments in the West and South Pacific. Students will consider writings by Eyal Weizman, Jussi Parikka, Barry Barclay, Anne McClintock and Jennifer Gabrys; analyse historical and current media objects that address colonisation (Tangata Whenua series, Frontier of Dreams, Westworld); and draw on cross-media artists, including Susan Schuppli, Ross Gibson, Kent Monkman and Lisa Reihana.
