Description

Language acquisition:

  • First vs second language acquisition of German
  • Heritage language acquisition of German
  • Influence of language policies on language acquisition
  • Individual differences, learning needs, autonomous learning

Language teaching:

  • Pedagogy of German as a foreign/heritage language
  • German teaching methods, principles and current approaches
  • Course and lesson design
  • Classroom observation and teaching practice

Aims:

On completion of this course, you are expected to

  1. Gain a deeper understanding of major aspects in learning German as a foreign and heritage language
  2. Demonstrate proficient knowledge of methods in teaching German as a foreign or heritage language

Role:

This course will improve the employability of our graduates and open perspectives for German teaching related postgraduate programs. The course follows a CLIL approach which means it is taught in English and German to facilitate content and language integrated learning. The course completes the offer in (applied) German linguistics courses, a research field that is emerging within the German discipline, due to new staff with necessary expertise.
