GERMAN 320

20th-Century German Literature

Description

This course will examine three key literary works against the backdrop of major cultural, social and political shifts in Germany during the twentieth century. Two World Wars, the Weimar Republic, a divided and reunited Germany will be a special focus of the texts examined in this course.

The first text examines masculine anxieties at the turn of the century, the second text, from a female perspective, explores the interwar years in Germany (Weimar Republic). Finally, the third text recalls the classical Greek myth of Cassandra and uses it as a commentary on censorship and marginalisation in the GDR.
