Global Challenges

Please note: this is archived course information from 2020 for GLOBAL 200.

Description

This is the Stage II core course for all Bachelor of Global Studies majors.

It has two points of focus:

  • You will work as part of a team to respond to a practical, real world challenge proposed by one of our industry partners
  • You will produce a research proposal for your research project that you will write under supervision in GLOBAL 300

The course combines lectures, workshops, industry presentation and mentoring in research design and methodology.

Team work

This part of the course is workshop-based. Working in a team drawn from across the Global Studies majors, you will choose one of the challenges proposed by industry partners and produce a joint project that provides a response or solution to a particular challenge in different historical, linguistic, cultural and geographical settings.

Research proposal

This part of the course involves practical sessions and small group discussions. The emphasis is on research skills and assisting you to develop your independent research project. Your project should draw on the language, area studies and major options that comprise your Global Studies degree.

Relationship with Industry

An additional role played by this course in the Global Studies degree is to underscore the relationship with industry in the widest sense and to situate your study in a real world context. Our partners are drawn from the public and private sectors, NGOs and so on.

Learning outcomes

You will:

  • Work collaboratively to research a global challenge from the real world
  • Learn to identify, deploy and critique specific disciplinary approaches
  • Consolidate the practical application of their combined study in a major language and geographical/cultural area
  • Build on and further develop skills in collaborative and independent research
  • Build on and further develop skills in written and oral communication
