Description

This course is a continuation of JAPANESE 231 providing more advanced grammar. By the end of the course, students will have acquired all essential grammar items and will be ready to explore more authentic materials in Stage 3. As with JAPANESE 231, this course is designed to further develop communicative use of the language in the four skills: speaking, listening, reading and writing in various situations as well as strategies to enhance and support these skills. The prescribed textbook can be obtained from the University Bookshop. Students must attend the plenary lecture plus streamed classes. 

Objectives

The purpose of the course is to consolidate understanding of Japanese grammar while further developing communicative skills. Classroom activities and homework assignments are designed to help students achieve a practical command of the language. At the end of the course, students should be able to:

  • Express their desires, gratitude, determination; give advice, directions; exchange opinions, etc.
  • Listen and understand dialogues and passages on various topics.
  • Read and comprehend written passages on various topics.
  • Write short essays on a selected topic using up to 317 kanji.
