Japanese Culture and Traditions

Description
This interdisciplinary course examines important aspects of Japanese culture, society, and history. We will focus particularly on the creation and recreation of traditions, and the interaction between cultural and historical forces in shaping ideas about Japaneseness. We will explore national traditions as well as the traditions that individual Japanese perform in their everyday lives. Readings are taken from the fields of anthropology and history. The course consists of four thematic parts, dealing with history, education, family, and health.
