Developing Literacy in a Second Language

Course overview

For most language learners, being able to read and write in a second language is a key component of communicative competence, and language proficiency exams commonly place a strong emphasis on reading and writing skills. The literacy goals of second language learners can vary greatly, however, depending on academic and professional needs and personal interests.

This course examines the theory and practice related to the development of both initial and advanced literacy in a second language. Key topics include: the interdependency of first and second language literacy skills, effective instructional methods, the role played by second language literacy in the development of academic skills where English is the medium of instruction and the assessment of second language literacy skills.

This course is recommended for both practising and future second language teachers. It can also help advanced second language learners better understand how to develop a more sophisticated level of second language literacy. While the course readings refer to the teaching of English as a second language, this content of the course is equally relevant to the teaching of other languages.
