Syntax

Description

What determines how words appear in a particular order in a sentence? This course introduces the field of syntax. Students will also learn about crosslinguistic variation and universals in the syntatic patterns found in natural languages.

No prior knowledge of any other language is assumed.

Course outcomes

A student who successfully completes this course should get an opportunity to:

• Understand the larger objective of studying syntax
• Be able to think about grammar in an analytical way
• Know about the basic syntactic tools for analysing sentences
• Be able to use these tools to represent abstract syntactic structure
• Be able to form and test hypotheses about sentence structure
• Be aware of crosslinguistic syntactic variation
• Acquire skills in critical thinking, academic literacy, collection and presentation of linguistic data
