Advanced Syntax

Description

This course is a continuation of LINGUIST 200, and aims to gain a finer-grained understanding of certain cross-linguistic phenomena. In a discussion-based setting, we will explore selected topics such as case, agreement, negation, questions, double-objects, empty categories and polysynthesis in world’s languages.

Course outcomes

A student who successfully completes this course will have the opportunity to:

  • Acquire knowledge about different syntactic phenomena in world’s languages
  • Apply their knowledge to carry out analyses in other languages
  • Acquire skills in report writing, critical thinking and oral presentation
