LINGUIST 301
Advanced Phonology
Please note: this is archived course information from 2017 for LINGUIST 301.
Description
What are the theoretical architectures available for modelling the behaviour and organisation of speech sounds?
This course is an advanced approach to phonology, and serves as an introduction to contemporary phonological theory. The focus is on rule-based vs constraint-based approaches to phonology, and how various phonological phenomena are accounted for. These phenomena include the composition of segment inventories, syllable structure, metrical structure and allomorphy. Attention is also paid to the interface between phonology and other domains, such as morphology and syntax.
The goal is for students to be equipped with an understanding of current approaches to phonology by the end of the course.
