Formal Syntax

Description

This course focuses on the recent models of formal syntax, and aims at cross-linguistic examination of hierarchical relations among different elements in sentences, different kinds of movement of elements (case-theory, wh-questions, affix-ordering) and restrictions on such movement (locality constraints) across languages.

 Course outcomes

  • Acquire knowledge of recent syntactic theories and apply it to analyse patterns in different languages
  • Acquire skills in report writing, critical thinking and oral presentation
