An introduction to the feature film and the main traditions of film criticism. A series of significant films, from the introduction of cinema to the present, are explored in detail.
Key questions to examine include:
- What is cinema?
- How do we study cinema?
- What kind of relationships does the film establish with the world we live in?
Students will develop an historical perspective, an awareness of filmmaking as an art and an interest in the relationship between films and society, including debates about race, gender, censorship.
By the end of this course students will know how to analyse a film by focusing on the technical elements of how a film is put together and use this analysis to provide the basis for interrogating film aesthetics, history, industrial conditions and social/cultural/political issues.
