Contemporary Chinese Media

Description

This course describes and discusses how the rapid growth of the creative cultural industries and the penetration of new media into people’s everyday life have impacted on media behaviour, practice and communication in China since the 1990s. It investigates a range of media formats in relation to media policies and media production, circulation and consumption, focusing on their aesthetic features and sociocultural sentiments as well as their interactions within the wider context. Study topics include advertising, cyber culture, fandom and celebrity, cultural policy and tourism, museum management and exhibition, fashion and style, rock ’n’ roll music, television communication, production and consumption of blockbuster movies and live mountain-and-water performance, and so on.

Students having completed the course are expected to:

  • Develop a comprehensive knowledge about the largest national media system in the world
  • Better understand the conceptual and theoretical elements of Media Studies
  • Increase awareness of the significance of creative cultural industry
  • Be more capable of using databases to support independent research on set topics
  • Increase the ability to apply information to develop a distinctive critical voice
  • Enhance communication skills in a globalised context
