MEDIA 781

Research Project

Description

This is a required 30-point course for all students in the BAHonours) programme in Media and Communication. In some cases, students from the PGDip(Arts), MA, and PhD programmes in MFT may also enrol in the course.

It is designed as an intensive introduction to graduate-level research, providing a combination of collective and individual learning opportunities intended to help you develop your research interests and skills. It functions as an introduction to areas of study in the discipline, allowing you to locate your own work in relation to the wider scholarly field of media, film and television. It offers a foundational training in some of the primary research methods used by scholars in our field. In addition to facilitating your academic work, such research skills are highly valued by many would-be employers of arts graduates. These skills include the ability to conceive, clarify and investigate a problem or research question; design and implement a research project; and cogently present the results of research inquiry.

The first three weeks of the course combine an introduction to selected research themes with a consideration of methods and techniques for researching, writing and scholarly presentation. In the first meeting the supervisors for 781 will present a focal point of their own research, in association with a particular subject area in which they will supervise projects. You will be asked to rank your preferences with respect to the areas of study introduced by the staff and you will be allocated to a specific subject area and supervisor on this basis.
