POLITICS 257

East Asia and the Global Political Economy

Please note: this is archived course information from 2017 for POLITICS 257.

Description

This course seeks to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the politics of industrialisation in East Asia through exploration of the issues, concepts and approaches in explaining economic development. We deal with one of the most interesting and puzzling questions of our time: why are some countries more economically (industrially) advanced than others? We focus on the state as a central actor in governing the economy and, in particular, on why it is that some states are more effective in facilitating industrial development than others. We also examine how states in the region are coping with new domestic and international challenges in recent years.
