Storytelling for Screens

Description

A foundation-level core course for a major in Screen Production (and open to other students interested in the subject), which introduces students to the conceptual and practical aspects of creating visual stories for screen. Drawing from various narrative forms, students will develop an understanding of the formal and aesthetic basics of cinematic storytelling in time-based media.

The course is comprised of lectures on aesthetics, narrative, film history and production techniques, screenings, exercises, discussion groups, and three key projects demonstrating lessons learned. Assessment is based on completed project assessments and a final exam.

Course Objectives

  • Students understand the fundamentals of narrative storytelling for screens
  • Students learn how to execute basic conceptual processes of screenwriting, storyboarding and lookbooks
  • Students develop creative abilities by integrating original ideas with discipline-specific knowledge

Class limits information for 2021: Enrolment is not limited. Students admitted to a major in Screen Production will be guaranteed a place.
