Everyday Life in New Zealand

Please note: this is archived course information from 2017 for SOCIOL 221.

Description

A cultural studies approach is used to address issues in the development of national characteristics. Which identity claims gain dominance? We investigate the "invention" of New Zealand and the enactment of values about nature, gender, ethnicity and branding. Myth-making in relation to globalisation is explored, with emphasis on the media’s role in the formulation and maintenance of ideas of nation.
