SOCIOL 230

Public Sociology and Social Justice

Please note: this is archived course information from 2017 for SOCIOL 230.

Description

This course examines the influence of sociology as both a form of praxis (theoretically informed action) and as an agent of social justice in the public domain.

Key areas of focus include developing understandings of the values and principles that underpin different concepts of social justice, an examination of the tensions between professional and public sociologies, familiarisation with the work of key proponents and opponents within the debate around public sociology and an introduction to the various issues, mediums and publics that sociologists engage with in their practice.

While lectures explore the key theoretical ideas and the debates and issues that inform public sociology, the tutorial sessions provide an opportunity for students to engage with the work of various guest sociologists and to explore their own beliefs about the role of sociology as an agent of transformation towards social justice.
