Description

This course provides an introduction to the multicultural civilisations of the Iberian Peninsula and Latin America, focusing on parallel developments, diverse traditions and cultural representations.

Comparative approaches are employed to explore common languages and cultural heritages, as well as cross-cultural relations between Spain, Portugal and the Americas. Discussions cover: cultural geography and history, ethnic varieties, national formations, religious traditions, political regimes, social institutions, economic crises, artistic and literary highlights, imperialism, decolonisation and globalisation. 

Multimedia lectures are supplemented by print, audio-visual and electronic resources in the library. The electronic coursebooks include essential references.

This course is highly recommended for Spanish and Latin American Studies majors and minors but open to all students, with lectures, videos and readings in English.
