TONGAN 301

Tongan Language 3

Please note: this is archived course information from 2021 for TONGAN 301.

Description

If you already have literacy skills in Tongan — either through passing "Tongan Language 2" or having fluency in the language — then this course gives you the chance to develop those skills.

We will examine:

• Customs and traditions relating to kava, weaving and tapa, values and beliefs, poetry and oratory
• Culture and change, including changes in social organisation, in Tongan language, in values and beliefs and political and economic changes
• History of Tonga since European contact
• The state of the Tongan language in New Zealand

In addition, we will develop your literacy skills through extended reading, writing, listening, speaking and research. As you would expect in such a course, most of the teaching will be in the Tongan language, supplemented by a course reader.
