Theory and Methodology of Translation

Description
This course will provide an introduction to the discipline of Translation Studies, focusing on contemporary translation theories that have originated and developed during the Twentieth Century.
Applying a diachronic perspective, we will give an overview of major translation paradigms. By defending a plurality of paradigms we aim at a more comprehensive understanding of the complex and interdisciplinary nature of translation. Rather than defending one paradigm against all others, we seek to raise awareness of the many valuable ways of approaching translation and to better understand translation from cultural, historical and social points of view. In addition, the application of different theoretical translation principles as well as translation methods and strategies in a wide range of translation scenarios will be regarded as key learning objectives.
The course's main topics are: The Global Translation Market, Translation Competence, Mapping of Translation Studies, Linguistic Approaches, Equivalence, as well as Functionalist Approaches to Translation.
