Lectures and tutorials
There is one flexible stream of 101 (and multiple on-campus streams). Students wishing to enrol in the flexible stream should select the FRENCH 101 Self-directed learning stream on nDeva.
Who should and who may enrol?
This stream is designed for students or professionals living in the Auckland area, but whose timetables do not allow them to enrol in our on-campus course, French 101. You work at home (or on campus, if you wish) with the same materials as for our distance learning course, French 161.
This course is an absolute beginner level course, designed for students who have no previous knowledge of French. It is not open to students who have achieved in all standards entered for Level 2 NCEA French or gained grade average 50 or above, or to students eligible for or who have completed French 102 or 162.
All students enrolling in the course must complete, sign and submit a Language Competency Form. Please note that failure to do so or submission of inaccurate or incomplete information may result in removal from the course at any point.
Course materials and text
You are required to have a copy of the 6th edition of the Deux Mondes Text and the online registration code. These are sold as a package or separately. The library holds copies of the textbook. Note that this is also the prescribed text for French 102 and 203. French 101 covers up to and including chapter 4 of Deux Mondes. You will also require access to the Cliquez-ici ! multimedia programme, Part 1, contained in six CD-Roms. The CD-Roms may be purchased for $100 from the SELL office (contact l.boucher@auckland.ac.nz ) or accessed at no cost from the Arts Faculty Computer labs.
Learning outcomes
By the end of the course, students obtaining a pass grade will demonstrate a competent working knowledge of language topics up to and including chapter 4 in Deux Mondes and in the Cliquez-ici programme, as set out in the course planner. Students will be confident in applying this knowledge to the four skills areas of reading, listening, speaking and writing.
Workload expectations
This is an intensive language course. Students must be highly self-motivated and respect the programme of independent study, classes, tests and assignments laid out in the course planner. In accordance with University of Auckland workload guidelines, you are expected to spend an average of 9-10 hours per week on the course in order to obtain optimal results. Hours might be divided roughly as follows:
Basic lessons & homework: Cliquez-ici ! & text book: 5-7 hours
Thursday class 2 hours
Revision, test preparation, assignments: 1½ hour
