Objectives
The ideas about 'Asia' that students bring to this course will undergo critical examination and expansion over the semester through a programme of lectures, readings, discussions and IMAGES, both visual and conceptual. Upon successful completion of Images of Asia, the student will be able to :
- Discuss the concept of 'Asia' as a cultural construct with its own histories, ideologies, agendas and diversities of perspective;
- Outline the broad currents of cultural, social, economic and political history of Eastern Asia and describe them, citing key illustrative examples;
- Demonstrate critical thinking about Eastern Asia and the interplay of significant themes of power, gender, nation and identity in its historical development and contemporary life;
- Understand the relevant concepts, and discuss the impact of large-scale social and political forces such as Imperialism, Colonialism, Nationalism, Cold War, and Globalisation on the region and nations of Eastern Asia;
- Demonstrate a mastery of library and internet resources and an ability to use information technology to locate reliable data and conduct research on academic topics related to Eastern Asia.
