Faculty of Arts
Required: In place of a published textbook, this course makes readings available in the form of a course packet in two parts corresponding to the two halves of the semester. You are expected to come to lectures and tutorials having prepared the assigned readings for the week. Readers will be distributed during the first lectures on Monday, 28 February (if they are back from the printers); otherwise, they can be picked up from the School of Asian Studies reception office or directly from Dr Behrend. Recommended: In addition to required readings, there are also recommended readings for each lecture taken from Nick Knight, Understanding Autralia's neighbours : An introduction to East and Southeast Asia (Melbourne: Cambridge University Press, 2004). A limited number of copies of this book are available for purchase at UBS. Several copies are also on hand at the library. You are not required to read these; they are made available for those wishing to have a better understanding of the subject. Other: In addition to the readings in Knight, other readings of interest are also listed for most lectures. Some of these readings of further interest, together with copies of lecture notes or slide presentations used during lectures, are available for perusal or downloading on the Asian 100 pages at Cecil.
