17 WILLIAM HODGES: THE ART OF EXPLORATION IN CONTEXT

Associate Professor Laurence Simmons

This lecture will focus on a single painting, Pickersgill Cove by William Hodges (1744-1797), who accompanied Captain Cook on his second voyage aboard the Resolution (1772-75). The examination will throw light on the different interpretations of Hodges’ work by Francis Pound and Bernard Smith, and consider how the painting might be read today.

18 LANDSCAPE, EXPLORATION AND THE ENLIGHTENMENT

Dr Peter Shand

This lecture, which was first given to accompany the William Hodges exhibition at the Auckland Art Gallery this year, looks at the construction of landscapes by colonial imperial artists.
