22: LANDSCAPE PHOTOGRAPHY IN COLONIAL NEW ZEALAND
John Turner
The topic of this lecture is the landscape photograph, looking at early New Zealand examples of colonial photography. It introduces the use of a new medium in the development of landscape art, and shows how photography contributed to the growth of the tourist industry in the colonies and to concepts of the New Zealand landscape.
Two of John Turner’s books that relate to this period of New Zealand photography are:
Turner, John B. Nineteenth century New Zealand photographs. New Plymouth: Govett-Brewster Gallery, 1970.
Main, William and John B Turner. New Zealand Photography from the 1840s to the Present/ Nga Whakaahua O Aotearoa Mai I 1840. Auckland: PhotoForum, 1993.
