This course is intended to provide basic written and spoken skills in modern standard Chinese (Mandarin, Putonghua, Guoyu, Hanyu) for true beginners. If you already speak some Mandarin and /or have received previous education in written Chinese, please see the co-ordinator immediately, so that we are aware of this and can possibly assign you to a paper more appropriate to your background. Should we subsequently discover that you have not been completely forthcoming with us with regard to previous exposure to written and /or spoken Chinese, we will require you to withdraw immediately from this paper, regardless of how late in the semester it may happen to be.
Successful learning of a foreign language requires certain skills and study habits which might differ from your own educational experience thus far. In particular, you will need to actively apply yourself both in and out of class in order to learn the material. This means that you must spend a considerable amount of time each day outside of class previewing and revising the day's material. Naturally you will also need to attend class daily, each time with the clear purpose of being an active participant. Listening to other people speak without speaking yourself will do very little to improve your own ability in the language. The more you are willing to give it a go yourself the faster you will learn. The better prepared you are before class the easier it will be for you open your mouth and try. If you have any questions about study skills or strategies for learning, please feel free to ask any of the teaching staff. We are eager to help you.
As students are required to attend all classes, those with timetable clashes preventing them from attending even one hour will NOT be enrolled in this paper without first receiving written permission from the course coordinator.
