Course description

The purpose of this course is to acquaint you with some general properties of human language. Morphology, syntax, phonetics, phonology and semantics are the core areas of linguistics, and you will be introduced to the basic concepts.

To illustrate the concepts, examples will be given from English and a variety of other languages. However, knowledge of languages other than English is not a requirement. And you will not be expected to memorise any of the examples. The function of the examples is to illustrate the concepts. You will receive class handouts with all the examples. The handouts for each part of the course will also contain a list of the concepts you will be expected to know at the end of the course.

Advanced courses in morphology, syntax, phonetics, phonology and semantics are offered as part of the Linguistics curriculum at the University of Auckland.

Note that you may not take both this course and LINGUIST 103. If you want to major in Linguistics you must take either LINGUIST 100 or LINGUIST 103 (but not both). Note also that several stage 2 courses require either LINGUIST 100 or LINGUIST 103 as a prerequisite.
