Welcome to CHINESE 200.
This site has been developed by the Coordinator for the Stage 2 Chinese language programme, Dr Hilary Chung. It contains all information relating to the course including all handouts. Much of the material is in Chinese. You do not need Chinese word processing software to access this material but you will need Adobe Acrobat Reader. To download a free version of this software, click on this link: www.adobe.com
This course and its companion course CHINESE 201, Intermediate Chinese B, are continuations of the Stage 1 courses CHINESE 100 and 101. This course is designed to develop the communicative use of the language in the four skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. It expands your grasp of grammar and vocabulary. You are expected to prepare for each lesson and to take an active part in conversation and discussion in class. Full forms of characters are gradually introduced and will be included in written tests. The texts (in intermediate level Chinese) are chosen to exemplify different forms/styles of Chinese writing and introduce a range of aspects of Chinese culture. Accuracy and speed in reading comprehension will also be emphasised.
A major difference you will notice in comparison with Stage 1 is that this year you are expected to take responsibility for your own learning. There are three substantial assignments during the semester but no quizzes except in the Language Lab. Exercises are given each week in tutorials and you are also encouraged to use both the extra practice material provided on the website and the additional exercises included in the course reader but not actively covered in class.
The teachers of this paper are happy are available for consultation at the specific office hours detailed above. Remember: many of your questions can be answered by this course website. Don't forget to check the FAQs page [frequently asked questions].
