About Chinese 130
This course explores history, films, philosophy, politics as well as overseas Chinese. Students are encouraged to rethink their understanding of what it means to be Chinese today, by tracing China's roots. As this implies, we shall take present-day China and look back at the origins of today's issues and circumstances.
This course is conducted entirely in English. No knowledge of Chinese is required.
Course aims
We have three broad aims in offering this course.
First, students will develop their knowledge and understanding of China today and its links with the past. This will be done by studying a range of materials (literature, philosophy, historical documents, films, etc.) and using a variety of approaches, including historical, cultural, literary, sociological and political.
Second, in encountering these materials and approaches, students will develop their skills in analysis of evidence and manifestations of historical and cultural thinking. Part of this training will be an increased awareness of diversity in Chinese experiences and the interpretation of those experiences.
Third, students will strengthen their ability to communicate their understanding, through written exercises (including a test and an essay) and through participation in small-group discussion in the tutorials, which are an essential part of the course. Students can earn 5% by regular participation in tutorial discussions.
